Position Overview:
EPST is seeking a skilled Electrical Technician to execute installation, programming, testing, and maintenance of advanced electrical automation systems, including:

  • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Utility and Industrial Communication Networks

Responsibilities

 

SCADA Field Engineer 

  • Develop and implement logic and control schemes for both remote and local operation of power system equipment, ensuring optimal performance and automation efficiency.
  • Program and configure SCADA, PLCs, and automation systems across various platforms, including SEL RTAC, Orion, Cooper SMP, and GE-D20, for seamless integration and control.
  • Conduct site commissioning and testing of control systems, verifying functionality and troubleshooting issues to ensure system reliability.
  • Manage data acquisition processes, including:
    • Compiling and organizing points lists for data transfer between control centers and operational equipment.
    • Assigning and programming data addressing and routing protocols to optimize system communication.
    • Developing Human-Machine Interface (HMI) screens for real-time monitoring and user control.
    • On-site testing and commissioning of data transfer protocols to verify system accuracy.

Technical Expertise Required

Applicable SCADA & Automation Platforms:

  • SEL RTAC, Orion, Cooper SMP, GE-D20

Data Acquisition & Software Proficiency:

  • Wonderware, Clearview, AcSELerator RTAC, Visual Basic, OSIPI, Python scripting

System Installation, Calibration & Maintenance:

  • Install, repair, calibrate, and program electrical power system components, ensuring functionality and compliance with operational standards.
  • Troubleshoot PLC and field instrumentation issues, including communication errors, I/O modules, and hardware malfunctions.
  • Oversee system upgrades, repairs, and maintenance, coordinating with contractors and vendors to ensure seamless integration and performance.

Automation & Control System Programming

  • Develop, modify, and maintain PLC code, ensuring accurate operation and system efficiency.
  • Download, store, and manage PLC & SCADA software backups, maintaining version integrity for operational security.
  • Create and update electrical schematics, ensuring documentation is accurate and aligns with system upgrades.
  • Perform confined-space installations, repairs, and calibrations, adhering to industry safety protocols.

Technical Liaison & Field Operations

  • Serve as a key technical liaison between utility personnel, IT staff, engineers, consultants, vendors, and service support teams for project coordination and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment, ensuring operational efficiency through routine inspections and servicing.
  • Monitor equipment performance, reporting deficiencies to maintain safety and reliability across all power system operations.

 

Qualifications

 

Technical Knowledge & Expertise

  • Comprehensive understanding of computerized instrumentation systems, including transformers, switches, control panels, and electronic components of control systems.
  • Proficiency in SCADA and PLC networks, including industry-standard terminology, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to collect, coordinate, classify, and analyze data to support operational decision-making.
  • Strong capability in reading and interpreting technical documents, schematics, and reference materials to facilitate troubleshooting and performance optimization.
  • Expertise in problem identification, solution development, and proactive implementation to enhance system reliability.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts, both verbally and in writing, with engineers, field personnel, and external stakeholders.
  • Skilled in building and maintaining positive working relationships with customers, departments, and industry professionals.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of hands-on experience, including programming, system integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge and technical competencies.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license for travel to project sites.

Work Environment & Travel

  • Field-based role requiring travel to customer locations for system installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
